Course: From the water at Kalua Koi on Molokai to the beach at the Maunalua Bay Beach Park bath house, a distance of approximately 32 miles.
Divisions Paddleboards and Stand Up Paddleboards. Both disciplines will have individual stock and unlimited classes, women’s stock and UL classes, and 2 persons and 3 person relays in stock. Equipment defines as follows:
Paddleboard stock (12 feet) or paddleboard unlimited boards (over 12 feet)
No rudders on stock boards (paddleboards).
SUP stock (14 feet or under, no rudder) or SUP unlimited (anything over 14 feet, including 14 ‘ with rudder)
Paddles (other than stand up divisions), webbed gloves, sails, or other such aids not allowed.
No weight restrictions on boards.
Any foiling device that lifts 40% or more out of the water, is prohibited.
MOLOKAI to OAHU PADDLEBOARD RACE
GENERAL RULES:
- All paddlers must wear official event jerseys (provided at no charge) during the entire race, failure to do so will result in an automatic disqualification. Escort boats and boards must have race # stickers. (to be picked up at REGISTRATION)
- Teams may only use ONE board.
- No drafting after the first 15 minutes of the race. Drafting is defined as being in the wake of a craft or fellow paddler for more than 1 minute in any 5 minute span.
- Any assistance from boats other than passing of food or liquids will result in automatic disqualification.
- Paddlers must stay with their escort boat at all times, even in the event of the boat having a mechanical failure. Any attempt to complete the race without an escort boat will result in an automatic disqualification.
- Safety of all participants is the top priority. All athlete and boat waivers must be signed and suggested safety precautions must be reviewed.
- All paddlers should be securely tethered to their boards.
- Stand up paddlers must complete the entire race standing up. Kneeling or sitting for more than one minute at a time will result in a time penalty to be determined by race officials.
- You may switch boards in the event of an equipment failure; however you may not change equipment class. In the event of equipment failure, the broken equipment must be presented to race officials to verify the failure, and a time penalty may be assessed.
10. The race may be cancelled if ocean conditions are deemed too hazardous by race officials (no refunds on entries).
11. All paddlers must attend the pre race briefing on July 24, 2010 at 5:30pm at the Kalua Koi Villas and meet on the beach at 6:15am on race morning, July 25, 2010 for final instructions and group prayer.
12. All racers must be respectful of the rules and property of the entire Kalua Koi complex.
13. If you withdraw from the race, you must radio the HEAD OFFICIAL BOAT on VHF 71 or 72 or CD 4 or 5 and let them know that you are withdrawing from the race. If your escort boats’ radio is broken, then physically check with the HEAD OFFICIAL BOAT, which will be stationed at Portlock Point after the first finisher comes in.
ESCORT BOAT REQUIREMENTS:
- All athletes/teams are responsible for providing the event with a boat waiver. These waivers will be available to download from the website and must be mailed or e-mailed back to the event by July 1, 2010 in order for your entry to be accepted.
- All escort boats must be checked in before the start of the race. Any paddler whose boat has not been checked in will not be allowed to start the race. Water patrol will be on-hand to enforce this rule.
- Escort boats must have at least one spotter in addition to the captain.
- Escort boats must assist any paddler or boat in distress.
- All escort boats must have ship to ship radios (CB or VHF). Escort boats must check in with the HEAD OFFICIAL BOAT no later than 6:30am on race morning and 2 hours after the race starts. Radio Channels: VHF 71 and 72 CB 4 and 5 – Ask for HEAD OFFICIAL BOAT.
- Race officials must be notified at least 24 hours prior to the start of the race of any changes to escort boat information.
- All escort boats must meet current United States Coast Guard Standards as defined by the USCG.
START INFORMATION:
- There will be 2 starts. The paddleboards start at 7:30 am and the SUP at 8:00 am. The race starts between 2 buoys about 150 yards from shore.
- Paddleboard athletes need to have equipment off the beach and on their escort boats before 7am on race morning. Escort boats will wait off to the south side of the starting area.
- After the Paddleboard start at 7:30am, the paddleboard escort boats will follow behind the final paddler until 30 minutes into the event or until the HEAD OFFICIAL boat gives the OK. The escort boats are then free to support their paddlers.
- SUP athletes need to have equipment off the beach and on their escort boats no later than 7:30am. SUP escort boats will wait off to the south side of the starting area.
- After the SUP start at 8:00am, the SUP escort boats will follow behind the final paddler until 30 minutes after the start or until the HEAD OFFICIAL boat gives the OK. The escort boats are then free to support their paddlers.
